Bringing Out The Beauty In Every Dog

I know, I know, you already know. But what about your friends, the new puppy owner you meet in the park, that person you see walking their dog every day, the couple dog sitting for their friends… This week it’s meant to reach almost 30° and while the glorious sunshine is welcome for us it is less pleasant for our furry friends. In the UK we often have these quick heatwaves where the temperature will shoot up by 10-15° between one week and the next. What this means is that our dogs don’t have the ability to acclimatise like dogs in predictably hotter countries do. So they will find things tough. 24-27° - ie the temperature this week - is already uncomfortable for many dogs. For elderly, ill, puppies or brachycephalic breeds this is even more so. Please be mindful of this - use caution when exercising - check what your dog walker/daycare is doing to mitigate effects. Remember that the sun is at its peak in the middle of the day but the hottest time is usually around 4-5pm. If in doubt walk early/late, stick to the shade, don’t play vigorous games or encourage running about, and most importantly provide lots of water. If you already know this and are sick of hearing it then I challenge you to share this knowledge with at least one other owner who might not be so clued up.
